How is Xoum different to a traditional print publisher?
Xoum is a digital-first book publisher. This means we pour our energies into our electronic publishing program and if we’re sure of demand, we print. Xoum publishing contracts do not include an advance but our authors are compensated with higher royalties. Our editorial, marketing and publicity processes are similar to any print publisher, but our focus is on digital workflows and online opportunities rather than those typically associated with traditional media. ePub files of most Xoum titles are available for purchase directly from our website, as well as via major online retailers including Amazon, Google, the iBookstore and Kobo.
What are the advantages of digital publishing?
Xoum’s digital publication model means we’re not limited by print bookstore shelf space – this gives us greater flexibility in the type and number of titles we can take on. Digital publishing provides many other benefits, a lot of which directly flow on to our authors. Naturally, we do away with print bills. There’s no returned stock, which means no stock management, warehousing or freight costs. Our titles have a longer shelf life – they are available until you say otherwise, which means they receive more exposure and have a wider window to grow an audience. We can report speedy and accurate sales data – we know where in the world our customers are – and we can pinpoint sales peaks in order to capitalise on marketing and publicity efforts. And given our efficient digital workflows, we’re able to quickly get new titles to market – usually in a matter of months, rather than years.
What is DRM?
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. DRM technologies control use of digital media by preventing access, copying or conversion to other formats by end users. Put simply, DRM stops you from being able to copy/share your eBook with another person or device, but does not prevent piracy. Xoum titles are published withoutDRM.
How can I tell the word count of a Xoum title?
Most Xoum titles include a word count as part of the book information (just click through to the copyright page). As a general guide, our prices correspond to word count – our novellas and shorter books are in the AUD$4.99–$7.99 range, our longer books are in the AUD$9.99–$14.99 range.
Does Xoum develop apps?
Yes. Xoum occasionally produces apps (mobile software applications) when the content is particularly rich (containing lots of images or video, for example) and warrants the extra interactivity and functionality an app can provide.
What formats can I buy from the Xoum website? What if I want a different format?
We sell ePub files (which are best read on mobile devices) as well as print versions of most Xoum titles directly from our website. ePub files include handy search capabilities (within the eBook as well as direct to the web), an in-built dictionary, and other useful functions. Please note you will need to download an eBook reader app in order to view an ePub. If you’d prefer another format, for example a PDF, you might consider buying an ePub and downloading free conversion software (such as Calibre) to convert your file.
What format should I buy if I have a Nook, Kindle, Sony Reader, iPad, iPhone or laptop?
For all mobile devices except Amazon’s Kindle (which uses the Mobi format), you can use the ePub format. For laptops and other desktop computers, you could buy an ePub and then either download a free eBook reader app, or download free conversion software (such as Calibre) to convert your file to your preferred format.
Where can I find information about new Xoum titles?
Info about our latest releases (as well as general news items) is displayed in the topmost sliding panels on our website homepage.

My genre isn’t listed in the submission guidelines, does that mean you won’t consider it?
At the moment, Xoum is not publishing plays, film scripts, poetry or academic titles. Our specialty areas are commercial non-fiction (for example, true crime, travel, history, popular science, and health & wellbeing) and commercial fiction (for example, crime, romance, fantasy and sf).

Yes. We don’t limit publications based on where the book is set and publish stories set all over the world, from America to Africa to Asia.
Does Xoum accept unagented submissions?
Does Xoum accept simultaneous submissions?
Yes. Feel free to submit a manuscript to us that is also under consideration at other publishers. We only ask that you let us know immediately if it’s contracted elsewhere, so we can advise our editor it’s no longer available.
Can I submit multiple manuscripts at one time?
Yes. You can submit more than one submission to Xoum. However, please don’t send more than one book at a time in a series.
Will Xoum publish my book in print?
Though our main focus is digital publishing, we do publish print editions of most of our titles. Print editions of our books are distributed in Australia and New Zealand by NewSouth Books and internationally by Ingram.
Does Xoum pay advances?
No. Our contracts are strictly royalty based.
Can I design my own cover?
As part of the Xoum publishing process, we design the cover for you. We ask our authors to complete a detailed questionnaire in which they can make cover suggestions, and we then work with a talented group of designers to create covers that take your suggestions on board, have a distinct Xoum look and feel, and of course reflect the genre and tone of your title. All covers are reviewed by our marketing team and our editor before being sent to you for your thoughts. Our goal is to design a cover that you’ll be proud to promote and that will sell well.
Who should I address my submission to?
Submissions should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org and can be addressed to Rod Morrison or Dear Editor.
Will my manuscript be properly edited?
Yes. All Xoum titles go through the same editorial development as with traditional print publishers.
Do I have to live in Australia or New Zealand to be published by Xoum?
